Restores are extremely slow after upgrade.

We upgraded fro Backup Exec 9 to 10.1.5629 over the weekend. Everything went fine. No error messages or anything to indicate a problem. The full backups ran without a hitch. Same throughput same amount of tapes used.

However, I am currently doing a test restore right now that would have taken less than 15 minutes on version 9. The job finally finished after 4hours and 13 minutes.

The restore was from the first backup after the upgrade. It was a single 800kb file to a Windows 2000 server file share.

There were no other changes to our environment except for the Backup Exec upgrade.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Todd,

To analyze your issue we would like to know:

1) Is the file share encrypted?

2) Was it a redirected restore?

3) Where are you restoring, on the same server or on a different server? if its
different server check the connectivity betwen BEWS Server and that target
server. Then see the path of server in file redirection in restore tab. it should be
the exact path.

4) Also you can check by transfering some data from BEWS Server to the target
server, that will show if it is a network issue which is caausing the slow restore.

Thanks.

No.

No.

Same server.

Here is some updated info. I mistakenly said that the restore was from files backed up after the upgrade. This was not the case. The 4 hour restore was from prior to the upgrade.

Restores that were created with version 10 take about 10 minutes.
Restores that were created with version 9.0 take 4 hours or more.

It appears that version 10 has to parse the entire tape(s) before it is able to restore the file leading me to believe this is some issue with the database.

Hello,

- Are you restoring any databases like Exchange or sql?

- If you are running the anti-virus,ensure that you stop the anti-virus services before every backup or restore operation.

- Make sure that the Network connection is proper.

No, I am not restoring a database. As I stated in my original post I am trying to restore a 800kb file back to the windows share it was backed up from.

The problem is not anti-virus or my network connection. If either of these were the problem then the restore would take 4 hours every time. It does not.

Files backed up after the upgrade work perfectly. Files backup up before the upgrade don't.

Hello,

you may try the following steps to improve the restore performance:

1. When the option 'Use storage Media-based catalogs' is selected, Backup
Exec is able to read the catalog information that is on the media. This
allows the catalog operation to complete much quicker as it is not reading
each file on the media to build a new catalog. If the option, Use storage
media-based catalogs is not selected during a catalog operation, all files
on the tape must be read file-by-file to create a new catalog and it will
take more time to complete the procedure.
So, by selecting the option 'Use storage Media-based catalogs', may
improve the restore performance.

For more detail information, refer to the following technote:

Title:"What is the "Use storage media-based catalogs" option in Backup Exec
and what are the effects of deselecting it?"

URL:-http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/200962.htm

2. If you have selected pre-job and post-job command (i.e Execute before
restore and execute after restore),it will take time to restore the data.

3. Ensure that Antivirus services are stopped before starting the restore
and have checked "Enable Agents using TCP/IP Protocol" on
Tools-->options-->network tab

4. Ensure that you have not configured specified network backup,
(i.e. Tools--->options--->network--->Backup network). In this case Backup
Exec will take the backup from the specified network, but will restore
through any network available.

5. Disable the screen saver on target machine

6.Try restoring to different machine check if speed is different

7. Ensure that Remote Agent is install and running properly on remote (destination system)

8.We do not recommend to open or run any third party application while
restore job is running. it will slowdown the restore

9.Update the drivers of SCSI controller and NIC.Update the firmware of
device with the latest version available.
