Restoring from BE 10d on USB drive to new server with BE 2012

I'm needing to know if this can be done. I got my old server(Windows Server 2003) with Backup Exec 10d I have been backing up to USB drives. I have a new server(Windows Server 2008) with Backup Exec 2012. I am wanting to do a restore on the new server in BE 2012 to the new server from the USB drive containing a full backup from the old server that is using BE 10d. Can it be done? Any documentation on the process? The end results is I'm needing to get a clone of my D: drive from my old server to the D: drive of my new server with all the same shares and permission in tact.

Thanks

Hi,

Shouldn't be a hassle at all. Check the TN below on how to import a legacy B2D folder:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO74274

Thanks!

This is what I would do:

The backup was performed by a very old version of Backup Exec. Irrespective of that, it was a successful backup(I am assuming). There are two things mentioned in the post:

1. Backup of the full server using Backup Exec 10d.

2. Get a clone/restore of the D drive only.

If it is only the D Drive that you need restore, then all you need to do is to create a new Disk Storage on the same location where the Backup to Disk folder was created(on the USB drive). On doing that Backup Exec 2012 would detect a legacy Backup to Disk folder on the USB drive.

After that, you will have to run an Inventory+Catalog job. Once that is done, you would be able to perform a restore of the D Drive.

About upgrading from previous versions of Backup Exec

It says

"This version of Backup Exec can read and restore data from any previous version of Backup Exec or Backup Exec for NetWare, except where Symantec has made end-of-life decisions."

BE 10d EOL is year 2012

So it means you may face issues while cataloging or restoring as BE 2012 is not developed for restoring from 10D

Yup, seems 2012 doesn't like my 10d LOL. I copied the catalogs to 2012 and it shows them but won't restore from them. It acts as tho it doesn't like my credentials because the test fails, but I know they are correct.

Keep the 10 d server for restoring till the data life cycle expires

as suggested by Sid you can inventory and rectalog the media once done that, restore D drive, however it will inherit the permissions from the root D drive. you can still try using restore security option which is by default selected

For the procedure to restore data from a defunct server is given in my article below

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/be-2012-restoring-data-defunct-server

You would not be able to restore the shares and share permissions.  See these articles

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH74934

You would not be able to restore the shares and share permissions. See these articles Pkh as per your statement u cannot restore share permissions however both article suggest a registry change with which it is possible to restore permissions. As per microsoft article This step overrides the shares that already exist on the Windows computer with the share names and permissions that exist in the file you are restoring. Hence if you restore folders on D drive which were shared without the registry changes wont it inherit the permissions... please correct me if I am missing something....

The share permissions are kept in the registry.  The only way to restore the share permissions is to restore the system state which in turn restore the registry.  The registry key given in one of the articles is the location where the share permissions are stored.  It does not restore the permissions.

OK, another question/idea.

What if I was to add the old server to my new servers version 2012 and run a backup on the new server of the old servers D: drive, then do a restore with redirect to my new servers D: drive? I tried to add the old server in 2012 and it said it(the old server) had an incompatible version of the agent. If I were to uninstall BE 10d on the old server could my new 2012 then install the 2012 agent and backup the old servers D: so I could do a restore?

You cannot install the 2012 agent if you have the BE 10d software installed on the old server

You need to uninstall this first

Yes that would be my plan, but then could I do what I'm thinking? Do a backup on the old servers D: drive then do a restore with redirect to the new servers D: drive?

My main concern is our policy requires I keep my backup data for 7 years. Once I install BE 2012 on the old server I will not be able to access the old backup data either. Also, the old server is Windows 2003 Server. I only have the 64 bit version of BE 2012. My old server is 32 bit will the new server and BE 2012 install the agent on the 32 bit 2003 server?

After uninstalling 10 d and installing the BE 2012 agent you can perform this kind of backup and restore

BE 2012 agent can be installed on a 32 bit server
