I have successfully backed up and been able to restore a SQL database. I have a vendor who needs access to an old backup so they may extract some data they need. When I do my restore to an alternate location on the SQL server the backup in effect removes the DB files from the origianl location and points the SQL instance to the restored location. I just want to be able to restore the DB files to another location so the vendor can grab the inforamtion that is needed yet still keep the current DB intacted and in the correct file location. Can this be done?

You could create a "restore database" and restore the backup to it
See the Admin Guide page 1137
