Hello

Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 has been added in the newly supported software compatibility list.

So YES SQL2008 R2 can be used for BE2010 R2 database.

BE2010  requires any version which is SQL 2005 SP3 or above.

While it may be possible, I've always preferred MSDE/SQLExpress to hold my BEDB

That way I don't have to re-install SQL in a DR situation.  Just reinstall BE (wth SQLExpress)  restore the data and catalog folders  from the latest media, and away you go
