Hi Support,

I'm Rifkha, from netsolutions,We had some question about Symantec Backup Exec:

  1. If the customer had 2 Server. They want to install the primary to one server, how can we install or connect the second Server to the primary Server?
  2. How many license that we need to purchase? Is the price different from the primary and the second server?
  3. What benefit do we get from purchasing the license? What effect if we not purchase the license?

Looking forward for your reply,

Thanks

Rifkha

You need to buy a remote agent license for the second server. This licence is different from the core BE licence which you need for the first server. If you do not purchase the remote agent license then your backups of the second server will fail after 60 days. Note that the remote agent license only allow you to backup files on the second server. If you need to backup applications/databases like Exchange, SQL Server databases, then you need to buy an Agent for Applications and Databases licence for each application/database

hi Support,

Thanks for your clarify, and I had another Question,

  1. Our customer has problem with their Symc Exec 2014 always failed since 1 week ago.
  2. After checking the error, it refers to the license which expired (as captured)
  3. There’s only support/maintenance which is extended, not for the licensed backup exec.

As the server is a database server, we afraid there will be another issue on the server and can’t restore. Please kindly your help to check it as soon aspossible.

The job of a maintenance license is:

1) To show a countdown for maintenance/suppory contract expiry

2) To trigger an alert when the mainteance/suppory contract expires

What a maintenance license does not do is enable any product functionality against the actual backups and restores and as such you currently have 0 agent (product) licenses installed on your server and any attempt to backup a remote server or a database technology will cause the alerts you have in your job log

Now if your remote server is running Exchange or SQL, then your Agent for Application and Databases license should be enough (as it lets you backup the file system of the remote server as well), if it is just a file server then you should have an Agent for Windows license. Unfortunately at this current time you only have the maintenance part against an Agent License along with The Backup Exec Server (product) license  installed but no Agent (product) licenses - which you need.

If you login to the My Veritas website you may be able to retreive your license details. If you cannot do this then you need to speak to Customer Care on the phone by using the Technical Support phone number for your region. At the end of the day you need an SLF file or a serial number for the correct agent (product license)
