Hi,
which version of BE are you using? If not BE 2010 R3, that's your first point of call...do an upgrade and see if you get the same issue. You need to run LiveUpdate before doing the upgrade, and can use your existing licenses.
You can get the BE 2010 R3 media from the download link below:
https://www4.symantec.com/Vrt/offer?a_id=93355
If you are running 2010 R3, you can run LU to get any outstanding patches you may not have installed. Once done, run the inventory job again and see if it gives you the same issue.
If it does, open up BEutility.exe and run a BEDB repair...
Thanks!

Refer to the technote " http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH147733 ". As addressed in this technote you will face this issue if Hotfix 354913 of Backup Exec 2010 R1.
One way to resolve this issue is to uninstall the mentioned Hotfix. But its not recommended to do it.
Recommended way is as CraigV mentioned to upgrade to newer version Backup Exec 2010 R3 in which this issue is not observed at all.
Thanks,
