Snapshot backup of VMware Vcenter Server Appliance, is it possible ?

Hi Guys,

I am looking for a way to create a snapshot backup of Vcenter Server Appliance itself.

Well, the backup itself should'nt be a problem as it will be treated like any other VM we back up in our environment, where Backup Exec talks to vcenter, trigger a snapshot creation, and backs it up.

However, the major issue here is, Backup Exec needs to talk to vcenter to do backups/restores, and if vcenter crashes beyond recover, there will be no way to restore Vcenter Appliance snapshot from Backup Exec, since Vcenter itself is dead.

Is there anyway around that ?

I have tried to add the ESXi host itself where Vcenter VM is running, hoping that Backup Exec would trigger a snapshot creation on the host and bypass the need to talk to Vcenter. That didn't really work where Backup Exec didn't show the list of running VMs on the host, as it would do with vcenter.

So is it actually possible to snapshot backup/restore the vcenter appliance VM with Backup Exec ?

We are using Backup Exec 2015 over Windows Server 2012r2, and VMware Vcenter Appliance 6 (Linux).

Thanks

Backup Exec doesn't initiate manual snapshots of VMs, and cannot access array-based snapshots. Best bet is to create a backup job that contains the vCenter appliance in it and see if this works. Thanks!
