Snapshot creation by BE 2012

Hi,

We have the following;-

BAckup Exec 2012 on Win 2008 R2 (64 bit).

EMC VNXe 3100 (Dual Controller).

Hyper-V servers with 6 to 7 VMs.

We were taking the VMs backup from the Hyper-V server. The snapshot is not enabled inside the policy. Backup uses the Microsoft VSS to take the VMs backup. No application GRT is enabled, expect the "Files & Folder " GRT(GRT of folder and files is enabled). Agent were installed inside the Hyper-V Host and VMs.

The VMs were inside the Hyper-V host server's drive ,where the drives are inside the storage box.

In other wors iSCSI LUNs(created inside the storage box) are mounted on to the Hyper-V server , where the VM's "vhd" files were kept. We are taking these VM backup using the Hyper-V license.

My queries were:-

1. Is there any way that snapshot can be created inside the storage box. (Where the snapshot is not enabled for backup and also no snapshot is enabled inside the storage box).

2. Is there any free space required for taking VMs backup inside the drive and along inside the EMC box.

3. How exactly the Hyper-V backup execute and take backup.

Please, help me to with the above queries.

Thanks.

You can try below steps to change VSS snapshot cache location.

NOTES

  • This procedure need only be performed once on a hyper-v system, and is only necessary for local VSS QR Volume creation (source and destination are same machine).
  • In addition to the source volume content, VSS will automatically snap volumes containing live Exchange or SQL data files, as well as the operating system volume. Change the default location for such volumes using the procedure below.

To change the default VSS cache location:

  1. From the command line, type vssadmin list shadowstorage and press Enter.

A list of any current, explicitly specified cache locations for volumes on this client is displayed.

  2. Enter the following command to change the cache location for a specific volume:

    vssadmin add shadowstorage /For=<source volume>: /On=<cache volume>:

    Where:

source volume = the drive letter of the source volume.
cache volume = the volume where the VSS snapshot cache will be created when creating a snapshot of the source.

    For example:

    vssadmin add shadowstorage /For=F: /On=C:

In the example above, during snapshots, the the VSS cache for F: will be created on C:

  3. Repeat the step 2 for each source volume.
