Symantec Backup EXEC 2012 V-Ray Licensing

Hello,

I have this prodcution environment:

  • 2 physical servers with HyperV on each one. Each server has 2 processors 6 Cores each. The first Hyper-V Host has 2 Virtual Machines; one has Active Directory and SQL Server, and the other VM has Exchange server 2013. The Second Hyper-V Host has also 2 Virtual Machines; one has SQL Server and the other VM has another Exchange server 2013.
  • 1 physical backup server 1 CPU Quad Core  (backup exec Vray Edition is installed on this machine).

On the first Hyper-V Host we want to be able to backup & restore:

  • The Virtual Machine Running Active Directory.
  • The SQL Server.

On the Second Hyper-V Host we want to backup:

  • The Virtual Machine Running SQL Server.
  • The Exchange Server.

We are using the Symantec Backup EXEC 2012 V-Ray Edition.

What will we need in terms of licenses and Agents ?

Best Regards.

If they are 5 processors then you'd need 5 licenses(I am still wondering why the physical server is being given a V-Ray license. It could work with a normal Backup Exec 2012 license). Backup Exec follows the same strategy like other virtualization enabling applications(like VMWare) as far V-Ray licenses are concerned. You may refer to the following to get more details on it: http://www.micromail.com/vmware-licensing-programs-254294cm1.html

To get precise details on it, you might want to refer to your regional sales executive/reseller/partner: http://www.symantec.com/contact_sales.jsp

The Backup Exec 2012 V-Ray edition involves the following:
1. One Backup Exec 2012 Media Server License.
2. Agent for Applications and Databases to protect an unlimited number of virtual guests.
3. Agent for VMWare and Hyper-V.
4. Deduplication Option.
Note: All of the above based on per occupied processor socket on the virtual host.

As per your environment and as per my unnderstanding, for the first server, you'll need one BE2012 V-Ray edition license and for the second you'll need another. In all, two licenses. For the applications, as mentioned in point number 2, you'll be able to backup all your databases based on the Virtual Machines.

Thank you.

You said "Note: All of the above based on per occupied processor socket on the virtual host."

I have a total of 5 Processors. Does this mean I have to purchase 5 Licenses ?

...it refers to the # of sockets occupied in your server/cluster. If you have 5 physical CPUs installed then you would need 5 licenses. Symantec licensing can confirm this.

Thanks!

We opted for the V-Ray Edition because we won't have to purchase licenses for Agent for Applications and Databases since it is already included with the V-Ray Edition. (Please correct me if I am wrong). I thought it would be cheaped with the Vray Edition .

The Backup Exec V-Ray edition can be extended to protect physical systems by purchasing and Agent for Applications and Databases for each supported application instance running on a physical system. You can also protect physical systems running Windows, Linux, or Mac by purchasing Agent for Windows, Agent for Linux, or Agent for Mac for each physical system to be protected.

As such, buying another V-Ray edition license may be costlier as compared to protecting the server with just 2-3 Agent for Application and Databases and one Agent for Windows. Again, the sales executive/reseller/partner may be able to give you more details on it.
