Symantec Backup Exec V-Ray Edition

We currently have Symantec Backup Exec 2010 and want to upgrade to 2012. We are implementing VMware. Will Symantec Backup Exec V-Ray Edition be able to back up VM and physical machines or do we have to purchase Symantec Backup Exec V-Ray Edition and Symantec Backup Exec? Or is Symantec Backup Exec V-Ray Edition a plug-in for Symantec Backup Exec?

V-Ray Edition includes the media server license, dedupe option, agent for vmware & hyper-v & agent for applications & databases for unlimited virtual guest systems...

for backing physical machines, you would require additional RAWS licenses...

Here is the portfolio licensing which would give in-depth info  - www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH178479&key=15047

Hi,

Q: should I buy Symantec Backup Exec V-Ray Edition and Symantec Backup Exec?

A : V-Ray edition is another method of purchasing BE server.
In 2010 version, you have (beside SBS edition which I put aside) ONLY the A LA CARTE legacy method in which you have to buy BE Servers, BE options and finally BE agents (like RAWS - the BE Windows remote agent or AVVI - the BE VMware agent).

In 2012, you can choose the terabyte method OR the v-Ray edition OR the legacy A LA CARTE edition.
Depending the edition you buy you get different entitlements. For the v-RAY, you got one BE server which will allow backing up all VMs stored on top of Hypervisors 'coverred' by the v-Ray license. This BE server is the same as the one you could install as part of the A LA CARTE lecagy edition. This BE server could be completed / enhanced by buying complement licenses choosen from the Legacy A LA CARTE pricing : Like LEO option, Applications & DB agents or RAWS agent.

Hope this will help understanding teh familly.

Is there any recommended minimum number of virtual machines before we can offer V-Ray Edition?

No,

You can offer it even if a customer is owning a single ESX with 1 virtual machine (planning to grow up this number!).

Usually what is done is trying many scenarii, one based on old licensing (which require doing complete inventory of what is needed) and one based on v-Ray... then simply comparing prices.

BTW: Customer can also consider the Capacity license.
