Symantec backup exec - dag/passive copy issue - Cannot extract mailbox messages from the Exchange backup.

we have 2 exchange servers in a dag in 2 separate datacenters across 2 separate subnets.  both centers are connected via 100 mb fibre circuit.   symantec bkup exec is installed on the server in Houston and the remote bkup agent on the server in New York.  When all databases are mounted on the Houston server, all the backups succeeed.    However, when we mount the databases for the new york users in New York, and run the backups for the new york databases i get the error message:

e00002f7 - Cannot extract mailbox messages from the Exchange backup.  Review the job log for more information. For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-759

I've googled this error and the resolution on symantec website suggests excempting the c:\temp\backup exce drive.  However,  the situation doesn't apply to us.  we don't have an AV scanning that folder.

Does anyone have any further suggestions?  any help would be much appreciated.  thanks so much!

Hi Please ensure be2010 r3 is fuly patched up with sp2 and 2 updates after it ,remote agent on remote server are updated too. Now about cannot extract mail messages only happen when you backup new York database ,so check no maintainence schedule is set to run at that time when backup runs on that DB, moreover check good that you have ensure no AV in between Please check the document below to make changes accordingly as per if your backuo are going to tape or disk and make the on host temp key below as per link http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH128187 At last also ensure aofo is turn off for exchange backup and try disabling the consistency check while doing backup of that DB and see if that works or not.please ensure that symantec doesn't, recommend to disable it in this case we are checking to isolate the issue Thanks

Have you tried running NON-GRT full backup on the database which is failing? All databases by the way are failing in the backup?

The problem is that the media server is also a DAG server so BE is believing that is always the closest server to do a backup from.

Try setting the Preffered servers option to New York (but bear in mind that whilst Houston is up you probably would not want this set.

Out of interest where is the Exchange CAS server controlling the DAG?
