Testing Credential Hang for System State (Backup 2012 - Trial)

delamodedan

Hi,

I am trying to do the Test Credentials for the Sytem State of a SDR One Time Backup of our main Domain Controller Server but the testing just hangs and when trying to run the backup the job hangs on Snapshot Processing.

Testing on other servers in the network all test successfully.

From what I can see the login credentials has Administrative rights across the network including the Backup Operators group.

Any ideas on what I can do to resolve this would be very much appreciated?

Thanks,

Dan

Considering that it is working for all the other servers, you might want to refer to the following article and ensure that in your Domain Controller, the following user rights are given to the default account used by Backup Exec(explicitly) :

1. Act as a part of Operating System.
2. Create a token object.
3. Log on as a service.
4. Logon as a batch job.
5. Manage auditing and security log.
6. Backup files and directories.
7. Restore files and directories.
8. Take ownership of files and other objects.

Hi. Based on your description, is seems like there is an issue with the VSS subsystem.  When able, please execute the following commands from a command prompt and provide the output for review.  The identical commands in Steps 1 and 7 are to determine if the "Volume Shadow Copy" service is executing before and after the  commands is Steps 2 to 6.  Thank you.

(1) NET START
(2) VSSADMIN LIST VOLUMES
(3) VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS
(4) VSSADMIN LIST PROVIDERS
(5) VSSADMIN LIST SHADOWS
(6) VSSADMIN LIST SHADOWSTORAGE
(7) NET START

Hi,

Thank you all for your assistance. I ran the above commands and below is the ouput. One thing to add, when doing the vssadmin list writers i let it run for a couple of hours where it stayed at the delayed response message. I then pressed ctrl+c to break it which is when the writers appeared.

Hi.  Thank you for the diagnostic information.  The behavior that you experienced with VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS being delayed\hung is the fundamental issue that is being faced by Backup Exec when testing credentials for System State, when a job is stuck in snapshot processing, when a snapshot job cannot be cancelled, and other snasphot related scenarios.  In these situtations, the VSS Writer subsystem can be in an unresponsive\unexpected state.  For the first NET START output I was expecting to see the ‘Volume Shadow Copy’ service executing and possibly in this unresponsive\unexpected state.  If you experience these type of Backup Exec hangs, an invasive workaround is to manually stop (NET STOP) the ‘Volume Shadow Copy’ service.  To confirm this condition for Backup Exec, please collect debug output with the Debug Monitor for the Remote Agent (RAWS) of a reproduced hang for further review.  Please let me know if you are unfamiliar or unable to collect the debug output.  Thank you.
