Did you mean:

The Backup-to-Disk device is offline.

We are backing up to removable Maxtor One Touch drives (three used in round robin fashion). It seems that when we move to the next drive in the chain, the following message occurs:

This is typically caused by the folder becoming inaccessible due to it being deleted, renamed, or unshared. It may also be caused by a disk full condition. The folder state has been set to offline. Please attend to this condition. Additional detail may be found in the Event Viewer - Application Log.

We then need to go into devices and select, backup to disk folders and remove the pause

currently maximum size for backup to disk files is at 80GB (the size of the removable media) With 0MB reserve

The job is set to Overwrite media when it executes.

This is a very annoying thing and something I'm guessing is pretty easy to fix. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Matt

Hi,

In order to resolve this problem refer to the steps given in the following technotes :

Event ID 58057: "Backup Exec Alert: Media Error (Server: "%server%). The Backup-to-Disk device is offline" in the Event Viewer Application Log
http://support.veritas.com/docs/252415

When running a job to a Backup-to-Disk folder, an alert appears stating: "The Backup-to-Disk folder is offline."
http://support.veritas.com/docs/236295

An error message "The Backup-to-Disk folder is offline" is displayed after moving the backup folder to another drive and also if it has been deleted accidently.

For any further queries please revert.

Thank you.

Thanks for the articles. They did confirm exactly what is going on but do not seem to give me guidance as to how I might keep the drive from going off line.

I have BE configured so that each one touch drive can hold multiple backups and the practice is to rotate between the three drives on a daily basis, so I always have a new destination hooked up (although all three drives have a destination of F:\VERITAS, which exists on all three drives)

Any ideas? Should I not be trying to fit multiple backups per drive?

Thanks

Hi,

Verify that you have created the "removable Backup-to-Disk folder" on the USB hard drive.

Please refer to following technote:

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/253764.htm

However note that when swapping drives or media, you will have to do the following:
1. Stop all Backup Exec services
2. Swap the drive
3. Start all Backup Exec services

Additionally you can also refer following technote:

How to use the VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.x for Windows Servers Hot-Swappable Device Wizard
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/267405.htm
