To BE(2012) or not to BE(2012)

I have environment with following characteristics:-

  1. all Windows environment (physical +virtual)
  2. on1 1 Gbe LAN link.
  3. 4TB of front-end data, growth 10% p.a., change rate about 5GB/day
  4. 2-sites, with cross-site replication required over 150 Mbps link

Questions:-

  1. Dilemma is BE2012 up to this segment of environment? Or should I switch to NBU product line?
  2. Is there any benchmarks/sizing guideline for the ‘optimized replication’ throughput capability for BE2012?
  3. Can the same BE2012 media server support both backup flow and the replication flow simultaneously? Any sizing guide to size the media server for it?

Thanks in advance

best regards

Hi,

BE would handle this and you should look at optimized deduplication with CASO. HOWEVER...don't go BE 2012 yet as the Beta that is no unfortunately pushed out till end of May 2013 is going to fix a lot of issues with product support and the issues that plagued its release.

Best ask the same questions in the NBU forum...

However...

4. Yes it can do this, but BE 2012 became server-centric, not resource-centric. Each server has its own job. If you have a virtual environment, then maybe BE 2012 V-Ray is the way to go for ease of licensing etc.

5. No...but check the best practices link below:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO74446

6. There should be no hassle with this. If I remember correctly, it's 1.5GB RAM for every 1TB you dedupe. More RAM and multiple cores on the CPUs will ensure you have the grunt to get the jobs done. Your WAN link must also be fast enough to get the data across.

More on CASO:

Thanks!
