Transaction log backup of Domino

Hi All,

We have enabled the transaction log in archive mode on the Domino Server.

We have set the "Mark Archive logs for recycling".

We wanted to know, which parameter of the file tells domino to recycle the Transaction logs?

OR

Does Backup server contacts Domino and Fire some command to recycle the Transaction logs?

Thanks

Ashish K.

We have also enabled the transaction log in archive mode on the Domino Server.

We have set the "Mark Archive logs for recycling".

But still it seems domino is not recycling the old transaction log files which have already been backed up.

Is there any specific setting we need to set on veritas backup configuration

Mark archive logs for recycling

Reuses the transaction log after it has been backed up.

Backup Exec will not delete the transaction log. Selecting this option only indicates that the transaction log is ready to be reused after it has been backed up successfully; the Lotus Domino server actually deletes the transaction logs.

This option is selected automatically when you select the full backup method. You cannot clear this option when you are using the full backup method.

If the option is selected when you perform a differential or incremental backup job, transaction logs that are needed to maintain the differential backups will be reused. However, it should be selected regularly to create space for new transaction logs.

Please refer to the readme above.

I use Netbackup, but I assume Backup Exec works similarly to this:

If you look at your bpbkar\mmddyy.log file on your client, you should see lines like this near the end of a backup run:

 1:16:29.151 AM: [5616.5208] <4> NBLN_ArchiveLogEnd(): INF - Recycle Archive Log:C:\transaction_log\S0050752.TXN UNID:0077d50a86257481-0f6a1da700000348 SeqNo:50752
1:16:29.198 AM: [5616.5208] <4> NBLN_ArchiveLogEnd(): INF - Recycle Archive Log:C:\transaction_log\S0050751.TXN UNID:0077d50a86257481-0f6a1da700000348 SeqNo:50751
1:16:29.230 AM: [5616.5208] <4> NBLN_ArchiveLogEnd(): INF - Recycle Archive Log:C:\transaction_log\S0050750.TXN UNID:0077d50a86257481-0f6a1da700000348 SeqNo:50750
1:16:29.323 AM: [5616.5208] <4> NBLN_ArchiveLogEnd(): INF - Recycle Archive Log:C:\transaction_log\S0050749.TXN UNID:0077d50a86257481-0f6a1da700000348 SeqNo:50749

Those lines are NetBackup telling Domino that it is free to delete those transaction log files.  Domino always keeps the most recent 4GB worth of transaction logs online, however, so if you don't generate more than 4gb of activity between backups, you'll never see any reclaimed space.  It will just retain all logfiles until it hits 4gb, then it will remove the oldest logfile when it has to create a new one.

Recycled logs over the 4gb amount are deleted by Domino a short time after the backup finishes (under 5 minutes in some test backups I just ran).
