Unable to install updates

Gene_Comer
Level 3
Attempting to install any update results in:

"The following patches need to be installed before this patch can successfully continue.

Be4691sp1.exe"

Even though Be4691RSP1_267180.exe was install some time ago, and the error occurs when try TO install that file.

This is on a Win2k3 server.

I have been unable to find anything about this elsewhere, any suggestions?

Hello,

Install the latest Service Pack for 9.1 which is SP 3 from the following link:

VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 for Windows Servers revision 4691 - Service Pack 3
http://support.veritas.com/docs/278302

It includes all the previous patches. Reboot the server after the installation. In order to check if the SP is installed, check the versions of the files as given in the technote.

Hope this helps. In case of problems, write back to the forum with details.

This problem was discovered when trying to install SP3 originally.

Hello,

Try to install SP 2 followed by SP 3. Link for SP 2:

VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 for Windows Servers revision 4691 - Service Pack 2 http://support.veritas.com/docs/275247

If the error still persists, check for errors in the event logs. Also while rerunning the installation, run an sgmon before the install process and paste the part from the sgmon that indicates any errors. Here is the link to help run sgmon:
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/190979.htm

Hope this helps. Do update in either case.

Unable to install a freshly downloaded copy of SP2, same error again.

The only item which showed in the Event Viewer was:

Application
Type: Information
Source:MsiInstaller
EventID:11729

Product: VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows Servers -- Configuration failed.

And the only thing from the SGMon was:

MsiExec: Executing CheckPatchDependencies_MSI.
MsiExec: Executing CheckPatchDependencies.
MsiExec: Executing GetProductGuid.
MsiExec: Executing GetInstalledPatches.
MsiExec: Executing GetDependentPatches.
MsiExec: Executing CheckForDependencies.
MsiExec: Executing DisplayPatchDependencies.
MsiExec: Executing GetDisplayName.
MsiExec: The following patches need to be installed before this patch can successfully continue.
Be4691Rsp1.exe

I had already done various troubleshooting things before posting, including the repair as mentioned in another post:
http://forums.veritas.com/discussions/thread.jspa?threadID=52070

It seems, that no matter what patch/update I try to apply, the same "error" occurs, even when trying to install the patch it claims needs to be installed.

Hello,

Have you performed the repair installation of Backup exec?

Refer the following technote:-

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/253199.htm

Also check the " bkupinst.log" located at c:\winnt to get the exact error messgae.

As I mentioned in a previous message, yes, I have already tried the repair install.

It shows about the same thing as the SGMon output:

Be4691Rsp1.exe

It has been over a week since this problem has come up, and various other people are having the same apparent problem. Is there a second tier support this can be escalated to?

Hello,

Please check whether the C:\Temp and the installation folder of the hotfix has full control for the Administrator and System Accounts.

Could you confirm this with us.

Administrators and System Accounts both have full control of C:\Temp.

I'm uncertain what you mean by "installation folder of the hotfix". If you mean the folder from which the hotfix is being run when attempting to install, yes, the accounts have full control there also.

Hello Gene,

Please try silent installation of SP3 and check the results from the link mentioned below:

How to install a Backup Exec hotfix or service pack without user intervention (Silent Installation)
http://support.veritas.com/docs/274398

Hope this helps you.

The only difference that made, was I had to check the bkupinst.log file to find out that it failed.

Next guess?

Hello,

Please reboot the server and then try the installation. Also refer the following link and verify the file versions. This will indicate if the files have been upgraded.
VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 for Windows Servers revision 4691 - Service Pack 3

The server has been rebooted many (too many) times to no effect.

The versions of the files are not anywhere near what they should be for SP3. I'm guessing they are so far off due to the repair/install that was done.

It has been over two weeks, and again I ask, is there a higher tier that this issue can be escalated to?

This basically installed Backup Exec over itself.

Which did no good, when trying to install SP3 (after rebooting the machine), got the same old message that SP1 needed to be installed.

Just for giggles, I tried installing SP1 and SP2 again, both of which gave the same error message.

Look forward to the next straw....
