1) Stop SQL server BKUPEXEC service, make a copy of DATA and CATALOGS folder.

Above folder are located at X:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec

2) Download BE2010 R3 from www.backupexec.com

3) Run the setup of BE2010

4) After upgrade run Live Update multiple time to install all the patches

5) Upgrade remote agents too.

Note: BE12.5 license key will not work with BE2010, before upgrading make sure you have the

license keys

This KB article provides the procedure for the direct upgrade process - http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH137024

Following is the link for the technote which has the snapshot of the installation/upgrade to Backup Exec 2010.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH124432

Also please note as this technote is for installation you may not have some windows during upgrade. Some windows like selecting the SQL instance as it will already select the instance which is currently used by Backup Exec installation running on that server.

You would not be able to use your existing BE 12.5 licence keys with BE 2010.  You would need a new set of keys which you can get from either the licencing portal or Symantec Licencing.  The new set of keys is free if you are on a current maintenance contract.

  • Check the media server for any updates and restart the server
  • Take Backup successfully from the Media server [C Partition &  SQL Database ]
  • Take Snapshots from all jobs(39 Jobs) with its Configuration.
  • Take the Data and Catalogs folders copy
  • Take the besernum.xml (License file)copy

  • Run the BE Utility to check the Backup Exec database
  • Copied the data & catalogs folders and put it in the temp folder
  • Tried to install BE 2010 R2 SP1 while the BE 12.5 still exist but failed
  • Uninstall the BE 12.5 and reboot the server
  • Installed the BE 2010 R3 SP1
  • Run live update and installed all available 6 Hotfixes
  • Tried to past the old data and catalogs folders from temp location to the original location and run the BE Utility to recover the BE database but the recovery operation failed.
  • So I stopped all Backup services and copy and paste the Data folder only for the BE 2010 R3 SP1 and open the Backup exec 2010 R3 and I able to found the restore jobs successfully  but the all jobs ,media sets and selections didn’t appear
  • Make the inventory job for all tapes
  • Make restore job for the BE 12.5 database but job failed

So I will recreate the jobs manually with its configurations

Job configurations are kept in the BEDB, so you would need to migrate that.

See this document on how to use BEMIG to upgrade your BEDB.

Bemig is the utility through which you migrate your backup exec configuration to another server. So if you have the backup of the data folder you can use bemig to migrate the data .

Uninstall the BE12.5 RALUS and manually install the BE 2010 RALUS.  You would also have to patch the RALUS with the latest patches.
