Upgrading from 2012 to 15 and migrating to new hardware.

Hello All,

I am totally new to BE. My boss just asked me to start researching the procedure for our upgrade/migration and that's what I've been doing. I've come across documents for upgrades and for migrations (individually), but I would like to know what the best practice is for engaging in both.

Do I upgrade to the latest version and then migrate to the new hardware, or do I migrate and then upgrade? Does it matter?

I had come across very detailed instructions for migration here:

https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.TECH67768

but this does not apply to 2012. I've also found this:

https://download.veritas.com/resources/content/live/SOLUTIONS/216000/TECH216706/en_US/HowToMigrateBE2014.pdf?__gda__=1455665329_21b42f80e87529cb49cbd8999be5581c

Which looks very nice, but I would be more comfortable with a document tagged for 2012 specifically, which I have not come across yet. If anyone can offer me some guidance, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Check the BE 15 SCL and HCL below to make sure what you are going to use is compatible with BE 15 and is supported.  BE 15 does not support some older versions of software.

You should upgrade your existing media server before migrating BE to the new server.  Use the procedure in the document below

http://www.veritas.com/docs/000021469

It is still valid for BE 15

Make a copy of the Data and Catalog directories under the BE installation directory before upgrading, so that you can revert if need be.

You also need to upgrade to SP4 before upgrading to BE 15.

You would need to get a new set of licence keys for BE 15.  Your existing licence keys will not work with BE 15.  The new keys are free if you are on a current maintenance contract.

There is nothing specific about VTL migration other than making sure that it is supported by BE 15 and it is compatiable with your new server.

What is the OS of your existing media server and the new media server? BE 15 requires a 64-bit OS

pkh,

Thank you for the response:

Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (SP1)

Processor: Intel(R) Xeon 3.6GHz 3.6GHz (2 processors)

RAM: 6 GB

System Type: 64-bit OS

I'm not sure about the specific hardware, but it will definitely also be 2008 R2 64-bit.

He also asked me to look specifically at the VTL migration, if you can offer any guidance with that in mind.

Thanks!
