Hi,
I am receiving email notification that I am having two updates including update to Backup Exec 2012, "There are 2 updates available. To download and install available updates, click the Tools menu and then click LiveUpdate."
If I upgrade backup exec to 2012 do I need an activation key, or it will be for free.
Thanks,
Mohammed.

Hi,
You need to download the ISO on the link below, and then contact the Symantec Licensing department to get a new serial file **.slf)
.

Check the 2 links below (especially the first) for more information on BE 2012...it is vastly different so I'd recommend playing around with it first in a test environment.

If you are on a current maintenance contract, then the upgarde to BE 2012 is free. Before you proceed further, I would suggest that you read my article below

Thanks for your helpful replies, Is there any way to know if the maintanance contract is valid or not, and how can I have a cost for upgrading my license, not for buying a new license.

You would need to contact the Licensing department to verify this...
