I have been using the same installation software to install BE 2014 for the past 6 months and have done so successfully on two other sysems. For some reason though, this new system I am using will not take the MS SQL Express installtion. I'm not sure what to do. I am installing on a Dell Inspiron Desktop using Windows Server 2008 R2. Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated.

Check and see if this is your solution:

There is no instance of SQl server on this system. This post seems to have the same issue with what I am doing, but I cannot make any sense of what his solution is. https://yagmoth555.wordpress.com/2015/01/28/symantec-new-technote-v-225-302-for-backupexec-2014/

The solution that you referred to is asking you to install the SQL Express software before you install BE. Look for the SQL Express installer on the BE installation DVD.
You might want to look at this document first

Are you able to install the SQL instance manually using this KB - https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH87111.html

No, when I run the installer, it gives me the Extraction windows shown in Figure 1 of the aformentioned KB article, and then nothing. It just seems to stop. Not sure why.

The KB you posted is irrelevant as I am not doing an upgrade. I am doing a fresh build.

This usually happens if there is an AV present on the system. Is there one ? If yes, is it possible to temporarily disable it to allow the extraction and then the install ?
Also, are you launching the installer using elevated rights, i.e. run as admin ?

I had installed Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager without installing a client, before BE and it was happening. I then installed an Unmanaged Symanted Endpoint Protection Client, and it still happened and yes. I am using elevated rights.
I will try removing all Symantec products then try and do a reinstall.

If all else fails I will wipe the hard drive and reinstall everything starting with WS2008R2.

Okay, well, with no AV and for sure running it as Admin, still nothing. It just stops! Extremely frustrating!!

Are you able to install SQL Express using the installer from the MS site ? If not, then this is definitely environmental and specific to the server.
