I am getting some errors with Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3.

I am trying to back up Exchange 2007 using GRT to a back up to disc.

The disc is a NAS device we have on our network.

The first error I see in the logs is

Job ended: Tuesday, November 08, 2011 at 8:38:57 AM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe0000397 - Cannot extract mailbox messages from the Exchange backup. Review the job log for more information.
Final error category: Resource Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-919

Backup- \\exchange.domain.com\Microsoft Information Store\Second Storage Group

I've tried several things according to other posts

AOFO is disabled
GRT is checked.

The High Availability Server option is set to

Back up from the active copy only(job fails if not available)

I've been trying for the last couple of days to get this to work

  1. Checked the login account, is Domain Admin, is specific to BackupExec, is not locked out.
  2. Tried starting the job from BEWS using the BackupExec account
  3. Run: vssadmin list writers on the Exchange and backup servers and make sure your writers are all stable and running.

1) The account is a domain admin and is not locked out

2) Not too sure what you mean here. It uses the account from above as the system login account.

3) Vssadmin list writers on Exchange and backup server look good

I think that link is broken. I tried clicking on it and it didn't take me anywhere.

I also unfortunately found another problem. I cannot install hot fixes I get an error LU1812 when using live update. I tried downloading manually and installing. It was looking for the MSI file, but when I pointed to the location in the Symantec install path in SEPM\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manger.msi it comes up with an error that it is not a valid install package for the product. I've also tried using the one on from the iso from when I downloaded the product, and it came up with the same error.

The only thing so far I tried was unregistering regsvr32 %windir%\system32\msxml3.dll and reinstalling the Microsoft XML Parser.

I'll look into this one, but just wanted to throw that out there in case it is related

On that same note I do have service pack 1 installed and hot fix 167567

 Thank you

Got the part with the hotfixes.  The problem  was that I was not using the right MSI file, and I needed to copy over all the files from the disc.  I will install the other two hitfixes 170962 and 171073.  Then try again tonight.

Thank you

That KB essentially checks if -

MAPI/CDO package is installed on the Exchange server or not...

Exchange Management tools are on the Backup Server or not....ensure that version of the tools on the exch server matches exactly that of the media server...

Check that your NAS is a supported device for B2D folders.  See the HCL below

BE 2010|2010 R2|2010 R3 Software (SCL)

If it is not in the HCL, then test the B2D functionalities with

B2Dtest.exe

The MAPI/CDO is installed version 6.5.7888.0

Exchange management console is version 5.2 R2 on the same machine

Looked at the HCL looks like it is there. I am using a Buffalo TeraStation Pro. I just upgraded the firmware hoping that will maybe fix the issue. 1.33 ->1.35 so it wasn't ancient, but anything may help at this time.

Ran B2Dtest.exe it looks like there may be some issues with GRT. So in the end maybe the device is not supported with GRT? I does show as GRT Tested but there is a note Tested with the BE 3600 appliance.

Thank you for your help.

I took VJware's solution, but also ran full windows updates on each server.  I also ran all windows updates, and upgraded exchange to sp3.

It seems to be working fine now

Pkh I think the reparse errors are a seperate issues, and I think I have a solution.  The account is a domain admin, but it must be something in the buffalo unit I must set.  The account has full read+write access, but it does not need like ful admin rights

Thank you
