VMWare VCB Incremental/Differential/Full Backup Strategy?

db_1982

Hi,

We are using Symantec Backup Exec V12.5 with 2 VCB servers to backup our VMWare environment. At the moment we are running a daily full backup of all our VMs.

My question is can we implement a backup strategy to backup the VMs using either differential or incremental with a weekly full backup? Is this possible when backing up a VMWare environment?

My understanding is that the VM snapshot is taken and mounted onto the VCB, Backup Exec then backs up the snapshot directly on the VCB. If this is the case I am not sure how this would work in relation to the archive bit?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

In order to do an incremental/differential backup in Backup Exec, you'd have to move to vSphere 4.0 and Backup Exec 2010 R2 (BE 2010 also does it, but R2 is the latest).

Until you are able to do that, your backups will always be Full.
