VSS Exceptions but VSS is Disabled

We have BE 2010 R2 running on Windows 2008 SP2. We are receiving exceptions on some of our jobs that the VSS provider is already in use during a backup. However on these jobs VSS is not enabled. Likewise VSS is not enabled in the global options under Tools | Options | Advanced Open File either.

This does not occur everyday but I would say 75% of the time it does.

Any insight?

There are items you might select in a job that use VSS irrespective of whether or not you have open file configured - for instance System State etc. So what are you backing up?

Thats the thing, nothing like that. These are simple no-open bulk files. For instance sql backups that are dumped to a remote location using a different backup product. We backup the native .sqb file's that are put in that share. Nothing to do with the system's native vss ability. Same goes for some linux backup shares and some other file shares.
