We have backupExec 2012 with latest update and Win 2012 hyperv with VM, we are doing host backup and VM backup as whole VM without any applicaiton agents. What Vss Writer BackExec using to do VM whole machine and host backup

...check within BE itself and see if it is configured to use a specific VSS writer, or set to automatic.
You can also open a command prompt and type: vssadmin list providers . This will show which VSS providers are in use, which should correspond to what shows above.
