Verification, Encryption and back up speed

We are currently using Backup Exec 11D.  In our old scenario we were using LTO2 tape drives and back up 550GB in approximately 2.5 hours.  We were not verifying any data.  We recently had a problem trying to restore data -from a reported successful backup where the data proved to be corrupt. We have now implemented Verifying on all jobs to prevent this from reoccurring.   This increased the Backup job completion time to approximately 4.5 hours, which was anticipated and acceptable.  We have since discovered which was previously overlooked that there is no longer the ‘option to password protect the media for cataloging’, but the only option is to now encrypt all data in the back up set -on the media.  This is actually good for us because our client policy says that all back up media is protected -and encryption is more secure that a catalog password.  The problem we have now is the back up is taking upwards to 10.5 hours to complete after Backing up -Encrypting - and Verifying the data.  We have reduced the encryption key to 128bit (from 256) and the job is still taking 10 hours, it was taking more at 256.

My question is there anyway to improve back speeds/overall job completion times and still have the security and safeguards on our back up jobs?

Thanks in advance for the help.
