Veritas 10d doesn't log message when tape runs full?

Have a customer running Veritas 10d with all update patches installed using a Tandberg 20/40GB drive.

After some automatic cancellations of the backup job running at night, i find that this is because the tape gets full and the backup require another tape to complete.
The second tape offcourse never gets there because this is not a part of the backup plan, wich then leads to the automatic cancellation when the time runs out, leaving only a "Backup job automatically cancelled" in the log.

My question is:
Arent there a way for Veritas to actually report/log that the tape in use is full instead of just ending the backup with an "autmatic cancelled" report?

Witrh a standalone drive, no there is not much that you can do, except extend the Cacellation time and just manually insert a new tape the next morning.

If you have two drives of the same type, you can set up a Cascaded Drive Pool, and when the tape in the first drive fills up, BackupExec will continue on the second drive.

Helge,

You will be asked to put an overwritable tape / appendable and if it was not the case while doing the backup! Check the alert history if you have had such an alert?

So, even if i remove or extend the Automatic cancellation, the only message appearing will be the "insert a owerwritable media" message indicating that the first is full, but Veritas won't explicitly say that the first media used is full?

Thanx for the reply!

Hello,

Yes the same alerts will be displayed even if the tape is full, asking you to insert the overwritable tape.

Thanks,

Is there then a way to determine up front (while setting up the backup job) just how many tapes the job will need to complete with the current hardware?

If you use compression, no there is not, since different data compresses at different ratios.

Hi,

We would also like to know the compression type that you are selecting ..

Also create a job (scheduled ) and then from Job Setup Menu, select this particular job, right klick on it and select Test Run .

check this options : media capacity check
media check

Update us on the same and revert for any further Query
Hope this will help you

Thank you
Gauri
