Version (old) compatibility

JohnTAus
Not applicable

BackupExec has not been used in our environment for several years, however, for compliance purposes we are required to maintain access to backups for a few more years.

We currently have version 10d (which is EOL and EOS) installed on Windows Server 2003, and this server must soon be upgraded to 2012.
I've found a forum post indicating 10d would not even install on Windows 2008, and therefore not likely on 2012 either.

Should the need arise to have to restore from old backups, which version(s) of BackupExec could be installed on Windows Server 2012 that would be able to restore from backups created with version 10d?

BE 15 which is the latest can be installed on Server 2012 and should be able to read backups produced by BE 10d, provided it is not using technology which is no longer supported.

...BE writes to tape in *.mtf format. There shouldn't be an issue restoring from tape, but keep a copy of BE 10d on hand and server on which to install it if needed.

Otherwise look at restoring those tapes to disk somewhere, upgrading, and then using BE to backup the folders. This, unfortunately, then means you need to manually keep track of the dates on which the tapes were originally written for restore purposes.

Thanks!
