W2K3 server backing up Exchange 2000 errors

Hi all,

I have installed Veritas V10 onto a new W2K3 server and it is backing up 4 servers nicely.

the problem i now have is exchange server is not backing up individual mail boxes.

when i setup the job, if i select anything but the mail boxes, or drive M, it works fine, but as soon as i try to back up mail boxes i get error e000fe30 - A communications failure has occurred.

Also the speed of the back up is very slow on this server 70mb/min instead of 400-600mb.min on the other servers.

Also - i have just noticed when i try to backup individual mail boxes the exchange server has a pop up error of te following;

Visual C++ Runtime Library.

Program: C\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\RANT\beremote.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

Now i am unsure if this means, Veritas, exchange or windows W2K is at fault. After this error the beremote service is at STOPPED posistion too.

Sorry for the amount of info here - just hope some of it has been seen before and someone here can help me backup my exchange system!

In order to troubleshoot the problem we would suggest you please refer to the following technote:- Title:-"A communications failure has occurred between the Backup Exec job engine and the remote agent." This error message is reported in the job log while performing a backup of a remote server.
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/256120.htm

As an additional information please refer to the following technote:-
Title:- When backing up or restoring local or remote media servers with VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.x, the job fails with "A communications failure has occurred between the Backup Exec job engine and the remote agent."

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/263776.htm

--------------------------------------

With regards to slow exchange Backups, Kindly refer the following information.

Please refer to the following Technote to know more on this subject:
1) http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/264851.htm

Please download the .zip file and make sure you have same registry key settings as mentioned in the comboON.reg. If you have the same registry key for the New Anti-virus version then it would work in Mapi mode. (Please ensure that you are not running the AntiVirus software in a dual mode (ie. VAPI/MAPI) but only in MAPI mode. Please refer the following document and make relevant changes in the AV software for Exchange 2003)

Please refer the following technotes as well.
2) Title:- How to determine if a reasonable completion time of an individual mailbox backup is being achieved on a network http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/235354.htm

3) Slow transfer rate or "Drive Not Responding" while performing Microsoft Exchange 5.5 or Microsoft Exchange 2000 individual mailbox backups with VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) for Windows Servers 7.x, 8.x, and 9.x.
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/231558.htm

We hope this helps. Let us know if the problem still exists and revert back with the error message.

I have followed the documents as they say and now i find when i run the backup job for exchange server 2 things happen.

1) Veritas V10 backup fails with this in the log;

Error category : Server ErrorsError : e000fe30 - A communications failure has occurred.
For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-65072

2) the exchange server has a popup window saying beremote.exe terminated in a unuasal way. this inturn has stopped the service called 'Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers' and the individual mail boxes are still not being backed up.

I now have a mate coming round who maybe able to fix this - if he does ill post the fix for you incase anyone else needs it.

BTW - the link V-79-57344-65072 doesnt help as i am NOT trying to backup drive M.

Colin - hoping to backup exchange before the end of the week!

Ok, WARNING - here is a log that is made when we ran the veritas program.

We still can not backup individual mail boxes.. log is a bit big... but hope it holds info for you people to fix.

As a test we have installed the full version of V10-eval version onto the server - but the server service doesnt load either.

Also the program seem to create a new MAPI profile everytime it trys to access the exchange server, before it then fails.

Please refer to the following points to resolve this issue,

1. Make sure that the Exchange option is installed correctly. Refer to the following technote,

2. Also install the Remote agent on the remote server (exchange server. Refer to the following technote,

http://support.veritas.com/docs/253058

http://support.veritas.com/docs/265736

3. Install the Service pack 1 for Backup exec v10.0 from the following technote,

http://support.veritas.com/docs/275248

Thanks for the advice, I have tied all of the above last week after reading on the internet other peoples problems, but no luck yet.

Will keep trying to work out why i cant backup individual mail boxes, but can do everythign else. Be nice to know why beremote keeps turning of the service too, but ill get to that after this one.

Still not working. Have to get a server engineer out to have a look at it as i have no time to spend this anymore.

Think i may go back to V9.1 as that worked fine.

I had some (not) very interesting problems upgrading from 8.6 to 10. I ended up uninstalling (completely) the 8.6 before installing the 10.0. After that, installation went o.k. and Exchange 2000 on W2k backs up to the mailbox level. Note that there is hinkiness with mailboxes and disabled user accounts.

Hi,

Please install the following hotfix and verify the results.

Please refer to the following technote:

- 10.0 5484 Hotfix 16 - Exchange Mailbox Backups (Backing up Microsoft Exchange mailboxes may cause the backup job to hang) *Requires Backup Exec 10.0.5484 Service Pack 1

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/275899.htm

We hope this will help.

Thanks.

Have read the instuctions, followed them to install the update and redid the backup job on the exchange server.

Same result

10 secs after the job starts, a pop up on the exchange server says Beremote.exe has terminated in an nexpected way. this box has C++ runtime error on it as per norm. The service also stops like before.

So im afraid it didnt work. :(

Anymore ideas of what to try next...

Sorry for the delay - been a little busy with other servers.

Thank you for your help in this matter - after a series f tests and talks with your veryhelpful helpdesk satff, we think the exchange server may be at fault and not the backup software.

We are due to upgrade to Exchange 2003 within 8-10 weeks so will hope this solves the problem.

Seems strange that the server worked fine with V9.1 but not V10 - o well, such is life in IT....

Will let you know if anything else happens or if I mange to fix it.
