WS2012 & Lotus Domino 9 with Backup Exec 2015 : Problem

shekhar-nashik

I am doing a PoC for a client on Lotus Domino 9.1 server . We have installed backup exec 2015 on a Server with WS2012 which the Domino 9 application.

The customer has another standby server with Domino 9. The idea is to backup all mail files once in a day and dump the backup to the standby server.

1. I have run Full backup of Lotus Domino databases i.e. .nsf files which have customers mail files for various users.

This backup was restored to the standby server. It works fine.

2. Now I want to run an incremental or Differential backup of the Domino Databases. But I found that whenever incremental backup is run, it backs up all databases fully again.  I have used the option 'reset archive bit'.

The customer's mail databases size is about 600GB and everyday about 2-3 GBs of mails arrive. Hence with incremental backup it should do a backup  of about 2/3GB only.  But that is not happenning.

We are doing the backup on an RDX drive with network interface. It is connected with iscsi protocol.

The backup Exec is running on the same server on which Lotus Domino is installed.

Any suggestions about what could be wrong and what settings need to be used?

What you are experiencing is correct. When a user receives even 1 mail of a few kb, his .nsf file is modified and the entire .nsf file will be backed up during an incremental/differential backup. If the Domino admin runs compact/fixup on the .nsf files then all of the . nsf files would be modified and be backed up during an incremental/differential backup. Essentially, unless the mailbox is a dead mailbox, you can forget about running an incremental/differential backup to save surface. It is not going to happen

The TN below is for an older version of Backup Exec, but take a look through it and see if you can conform to what it is stating is required to do proper backups of Lotus Domino:

https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.TECH46513

I would also make sure that the version of Domino you're using is supported by BE 2014:

Thanks!

Also refer to the Best Practices guide below:

The option you have selected for the INCR backup of Domino is also correct.

Thanks!

BE 15 does not support Domino 9.1. It only support up till Domino 9.0. See the SCL below http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH227896
