We have BE2012 sp3 on HP

We have BE2012 sp3 on HP Dl180g6, Server 2008R2 with 32GB Ram.

Dedupe is provided by 10GB iSCSI connected QNAP NAS with 10 x 3TB disks raid 10 but performance is not good.

The QNAP TS-EC1679U-RP is listed on the BE2014 HCL as BEDupe target

The Dedupe folder was upgraded from BE2010 sp3 to BE2012

Will we see dedupe performance increase with another in place upgrade from BE2012 to BE2014 ?

or should we rebuild the media server with Server 2012 and create a new dedupe folder?

I'm already thinking, upgrade and see...

That's a tough question really. You need to see the BE 2014 release notes to see if there are any improvements in BE 2014's implementation of dedupe vs. BE 2012.

Either way, BE 2014 has newer OS and application support, and additional features that have been added back in, so it might be worthwhile upgrading. If a clean installation is what you want to do, then that's also an option. Just grab manual copies of your Data/Catalogs folders before doing any sort of installation.

Thanks!

Previously, a Symantec employee has commented that they have found performance problems with dedup folders on iSCSI disks. He recommends that a local disk be used for the dedup folder

Hello Dave,

We have many improvements in BE 2014 and one of them is majorly focussed on Performance. So to answer your query we should surely see performance improvement while backing up to the Dedupe folder with BE 2014.

Here is the extract from the BE 2014 Official Blog:

  • Optimized performance: In our internal testing, Backup Exec 2014 has shown up to 100%[1] faster backup and deduplication speeds compared to previous versions of the software

Following is the link to the Blog:

I hope that answers your query.

Thanks,

-Sush...
