Hi, There is no best practice for offsite tapes. This is down to company audit requirements. How long do you need to retain your backups for? Monthly? Yearly? Weekly? You then base the number of tapes on what it takes a FULL backup to be streamed to tape. So, use this as an example: Weekly - keep for 4 weeks offsite - FULL backup = 2 tapes == 8 tapes in total (initially) Monthly - Keep for 1 year - FULL Backup = 2 takes == 24 tapes in total (initially) There is no hard-and-fast rule. You haven't mentioned how many tapes you use currently on a daily basis, so start by finding out what the company's auditors want, or check the recovery plan. Thanks!

To add to Craig's answer different departments in your compoany may have different backup retention requirements (based on either official audit rules or on their own idea of retention practices for the types of data they work with). As such you probably have to review such things with departmental heads as well - you might even find that the backup of certain specific servers needs to have different retenions compared with others servers.

Hence no best practice and it is a minefield to work-out what best fits your company.
