Which Backup Exec licenses do I need?

Hoefsmit

I am new to Symantec Backup Exec. I am looking for another backup solution.
I have the following IT-environment:

4 Vshpere hosts
1 VCenter host
15 Windows 2008 servers (virtual machines) with the following roles:
- 1 MS Exchange 2010 server with 30 user email boxes
- 2 MS SQL 2008 servers
- 1 File server
- 1 Sharepoint 2010 server
- 1 Domain controller (MS active directory)
- 1 Webserver (IIS)
- 4 Citrix Xenap servers
- 4 Application servers

I would like to backup all above mentioned machines except the 4 Citrix servers:
- File backup
- AD backup
- Virtual Machine backup
- Sharepoint environment backup
- Mailbox backup

What licenses should I buy?

Hello,

Based on how I analyzed the scneario, you'd need the following:

1. Backup Exec 2012 Server license: Quantity- 1

2. Agent for VMWare and Hyper-V: Quantity- 5 (for 4 vSphere Hosts and 1 vCenter host)

3. Agent for Applications and Databases: Quantity- 5 (1 for Exchange, 2 for SQL, 1 for Sharepoint, 1 for Domain Controller)

For all the other File Servers/Application Servers, you would be entitled to install Remote Agent for Windows Servers(RAWS) since you would already have the license for Agent for VMWare and Hyper-V (which would allow you to install RAWS on the Virtual Machines --or-- you could perform a .vmdk level backup directly)

For more details, you could refer to the following links:

It might be cheaper for you to get the V-Ray edition.  This is licenced per VM core and you get to use an unlimited number of Agent for Application and Databases licences to backup your applications and databases.  See this blog

Adding to what pkh wrote, there are some offers for the Backup Exec V-Ray edition and the Backup Exec Agent for VMware and Hyper-V.

Please refer to the following link for more details on it:

...although the OP stated "vCenter host", this is in no way defined as a host by either VMware or the BE 2012 licensing guide. As such, your count should be 4 x Agent for VMware and Hyper-V, and 1 x RAWS for the vCenter server...this license needs to be purchased if the vCenter server is a physical server.

Thanks!

...the license count offered is not exactly correct. Either check the licensing guide or confirm with the Symantec licensing department!

Thanks!

PKH & Sid have it nailed.

With V-Ray edition you would need 4 Licenses of BE V-Ray and that's it.  All your VMs & databases are covered.  If you have any other physical servers, you can add them with a Remote Agent or Database agent, depending on what they are.

This video gives a great explanation of the V-Ray technology & licensing http://buex.ec/WhatIsVray

If the VM hosts have more than a single core, then more V-Ray licences are required since the V-Ray licence is per VM core and not by the physical host.
