Windows 2008 R2 Restore fails

Hi,

I'm having a great deal of trouble restoring windows 2008 R2 using Backup exec 12.5 service pack 3.

This is a domain controller and I am restoring C drive and system state and service state as per my usual restore routines.

The server starts to boot but then fails and just keeps restarting, trying to repair the installation fails. Appears to try and boot so doesn't look like a boot. device problem.

I have restored many, many windows 2000 and 2003 boxes but the restore procedure does not appear to work for windows 2008 R2.

I am not restoring the utility partition so that may be were I'm going wrong.  Has anybody restored windows 2008 R2 and can give me some pointers.

Thanks

Mark

Hello,

Is backup exec installed on the same server?
Is the server a domain controller?

No i'm using a media server and installing using remote agent, which works fine.

yes the server I'm restoring is a domain controller.

Appears to be a boot problem.

I have attached the jobs logs used in this restore.

The jobs are 100% successful but the server fails to boot.

Hello,

The logs shows on the System state and the shadow copy components...C-Drive is not listed...

 2 jobs one I restored C driver.

Another job restored system state and service state. Why do you think C drive isn't restored?

thanks

Hello,

Did you restored System state and the C-Drive in seperate jobs?

yes one after the other  but C drive first

Hello,

For performing Disaster Recovery we must select the C-Drive and the System State in a SINGLE job. Also check the box change the DNX Suffix under System Properties-->Computer Name TAB-->Change-->More...

Hope this helps...

I followed your suggestions and I got this error http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/266614.htm

Which states I need to install C first and then system state.

Needless to state the restore failed and the server would not boot.

I have even tried to do a system repair after the restore using the windows 2008 r2 disk.

I am restoring onto different hardware! which could also be posing me more problems I feel.

Any other pointers?

Hello,

We wont be able to restore on a different hardware. You will need the Disaster Recovery Specalist Software "Backup Exec System Recovery" which supports restore on different hardware.

Well isn't that just fantastic! Hardly an advance in backup technology remove support for different hardware!
