Windows Server 2016 - virtual Hyper V Backup Failures GRT

I'm running Backup Exec 16 on Windows Server 2008 R2. Recently, I introduced a new Hyper V host running Windows Server 2016. The host has only one virtual machine which runs Windows Server 2008 R2. When running the virtual based backup (not the agent based), I consistently recieve VSS errors and the backup fails shortly after starting. This occurs only if the GRT option is enabled for virtual machines. With GRT disabled the backup completes without issue. To confirm, is this because I can't use the GRT feature when backing up a VM hosted in 2016 while my BE server is only 2008 R2? If this is the case, how do I restore individual files if need be without two backup jobs (one virtual and one agent based)? I know I can restore the whole virtual machine but this isn't practical if I only need to retreive a file.

Thanks in advance!

the backups should work with or without GRT.

Are you attempting application GRT or just file level GRT?  If Application GRT, what application is installed on the guest VM?

Can you attach the job log for review?
