backing up data from san volumes ( on a windows 2003 file server cluster server(2 nodes))

Hi everyone

We have a windows 2003 file server cluster(2 nodes)  with SAN  in a production network setup .
clinet wants its data files to be backedup  onto another   server in staging environment(targetserver) having enough disk space to hold backup data.
client has backup exec  server 9.1 with one backup exec agent windows license.
can someone let me know how can we identify if thebackup exec version is clusteraware?
can we install backup exec9.1 on  server(target server) having enough space. and install backup exec agent on file server cluster to backup the data.
is it possibleto backup data without installing agent and simply to use nbt shares from withing backup exec selections.
is there  any documentation on this?

any pointers  and documentation will be helpful..

Hi Deepa,

Best bet is to ALWAYS use the RAWS agent. This is going to make backing up, and restoring a lot simpler. There is a cost involved, but in this case I would always suggest not going the cheaper option, and putting in something that actually does work.

Backup Exec 9.1 is cluster-aware, so you should have no issues here.

What you would basically do is run the RAWS installation on both physical nodes, and once done, add in the virtual node and back that up ONLY.

Hi Craig

thanks for a quick note,  I understand we don't need any other agent or have any complexities involved for backing up data through SAN volumes  once both file cluster nodes have agent installed.

We just had been looking around to do the files data backup and though probably better not to use agent and  keep things simple and backup data using nbt shares.

Hi Deepa,

Quite correct...install RAWS on both servers, and then add in both, and the virtual node to the selection list. However, you only need to back up the virtual node...

Hi Craig

did you mean installing RAWS agent on both nodes? here . I have worked on setting up Backup exec servers and setting up remote agents with remote windows servers ,though not on  cluster servers as yet.

Will we be able to do remote push installation of RAWS agent, after taking care of all firewalls/nating rules in place across teh 2 networks of staging and production environments we  have.

are there any specific steps to do RAWS agent insatalltions on both nodes in file cluster?

Hi,

Yeah, for sure. As long as the required ports are open, and you have the correct permissions to your service account, you will be able to do a push-install.

From there, add in the IP addresses of the physical servers, and the virtual node, and select the drives/Exchange etc. on the virtual node.

Add in the System State of the physical servers + any data that you need backed up. Might be worth splitting the backups if you back up data and Exchange in the same job.

Hi Deepa,

Did you ever come right here?

Thanks!
