backup copy of data to tape

Newly imported envrioment; we are sending data directly to tape; coming from a Commvault envrioment; I could not understand the reason for not copying the month end data from disk to tape as that would give you 30 days to copy the month end data.  

Are there any risks/benefits and hindrances in this approach?

Should be possible. There should not be any hindrance.Duplicate the monthly full backup to tape ( you can set the schedule (or link to full job) for duplicate and choose the full template)
