...mainly to your tape drive where you can increase the buffer size. I normally leave mine at 1MB. But you're not going to get massive increases.

Another option would be to backup-to-disk first, and then duplicate that to tape. This would be faster initially to disk as there would be no shoe-shining to disk.

Thanks!

If you want to change the buffer size for a tape drive, then you'll need to go to Drive Properties | Configuration

Follow these steps to increase the buffer size:

  1. Open Backup Exec 2010
  2. Click on the Devices tab
  3. Right-click on the tape drive
  4. Select Properties
  5. Select the Configuration tab on the Drive Properties window
  6. The Buffer Size is located second from the top, under Preferred configuration

When you backup small files, there a lot more disk I/O's involved.  The OS has to read the directory and then go to the sector where the file is and read it.  This procedure is then repeated for each small file.  With a big file, after reading the directory, it would just keep reading the same file until the entire file is read.  For a comparable amount of data, it would be a lot faster to backup a big file than a lot of small files that amount  to the same amount of data.   Hence there is nothing much that you can do to improve speed except to defrag the disk to make sure that the files are contiguous.

What the others have suggested is to tune your tape drive which will have an effect on your overall backup speed, but if you have a lot of small files, tuning your tape drive will not have any effect.  You can see my article below on how to tune your tape drive.
