Our backup server is currently on windows server 2008 and backupexec version 2012, I'm wipining out the server, rebuilding as windows server 2012 and need to know, what version of backupexec should I install first to ensure I can import the DB,cataloges, etc. from the old version?  what is the recommended installation steps to avoid losing the exisitng DB and cataloges?

Alao, what exactly do I need to backup from the exisitng BE2012 version to be able to import into the new version?

Since you are going to rebuild same server, instead of using "Backup Exec Migration Assistant" try the manual steps provided in the above technote.

You may copy all the data/folders mentioned in above technote to a shraed network folder and import it after server is rebuilt. If possible install the same version of Backup Exec.
