can't see exchange

SFPandora

I have a windows small business 2008 with backup exec 12.5. with all updated installed. My problem is that I cannot see exchange first storage group and second storage group when i create a backup process . The strange thing is that I could see them till some days ago.... I still have a backup process created to backup exchange and if I start it, I receive the following error:
error 0xe000fe1f. The device cannot be found.
The only thing changed in the last days is the installation of some updates.
Please someone help: it's not a good living without exchange backup....:(

Services should be as follows:

Backup Exec Agent Browser - Domain Service Account
Backup Exec Device and Media Service - Domain Service Account
Backup Exec Job Engine - Domain Service Account
Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Systems - Local System
Backup Exec Server - Domain Service Account

Hi,

Remove your Exchange agent license in BEWS, restart your services, re-add them, and restart the services 1 more time.
I had the same sort of problem, and that's what fixed it.

I came accross the same issue few days ago, uninstalling the excahnge agent license key and reinstalling does resolves the issue,

Not applicable

if the uninstalling and reinstalling exchange license key does not help, please follow the steps listed below....make sure the backup exec remote agent service is running and on local system account....

1. Add a DWORD value called MonadRpcTimeout in the Registry on the Backup Exec server and the Exchange server into the following location:
HKLM\Software\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Exchange

2. Set the value of MonadRpcTimeout to 7200 decimal

3. Restart the remote agent and backup exec services

and than check....

please mark it a solution if this resolves the issue

Thank you for the answers, even on sunday. Can you explain me the procedure to uninstall and reinstall the exchange agent? I don't want to have other problems...

Hi,

You'd go Tools --> Install Options and License Keys on this Media Server...

This will show you your licenses. You can click on your Exchange license, and then click Remove and follow the prompts.

Restart your services, and then re-add your licenses in exactly the same way.

Ok I forgot to say it's a backup exec small business edition so I have just one key. Sorry it's my first time with be and I didn't know other version had many keys. Anyway my problem is: I go on tools--> install options and license keys on this media server, I remove the key, then I have two option: cancel or next. If I choose cancel I exit but if I open Install options and license keys again the key is still there. If I go choose next I find the be component selection and in the end the button is install...
If I select install will be fully reinstalled?

It should uninstall it. Once done, you are able to put the licenses in again. I know that's how it works with BEWS.

Well nothing to do. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and I tried modifying the registry but there's no change.

could be a permission problem? I changed account one or two weeks ago. anyway now i'm using the old one. What kind of permission are needed? I notice I can't even access to sharepoint resources at the moment; if I try to select it I receive an error. I'm using the domain admin account

Domain Admins should be sufficient for that.

Another thing to try is to create a new user account with the same permissions, and use that as the logon account. Have seen that clear up issues too.

SFPandora

I started to use a new account copying permission from the domain admin user, but when problems started I thought that could be the problem and I returned to use domain admin. Do all be services run with the same account?

All the services would yes, bar 1 which runs with the local system account.
You could change the service account details manually through the Services snap-in for Windows Server, or through BEutility.exe for example. A restart of the services commits those changes.

ok. which is the service that runs with local system account? I'll try this way, this is my last chance I think,,, I also tried with ntbackup and it sees exchange storage.

I tried with ntbackup to backup exchange storage and I received an error, too. Now also ntbackup can't see exchange storage :(

Dude,

Best to log a call then and post the solution here in the forums. Close the forum query with your solution if it works...weird!

Ok, ntbackup works. Maybe the first some user was using his email? Anyway the problem seems bound to be. I still need to know which service runs with local system account.
Ok, this is what I find in log using sgmon and logging just Job Engines, Raws, Agent browser:

BECryptoInit: BECrypto non-FIPS mode successfully enabled.

Services should be as follows:

Backup Exec Agent Browser - Domain Service Account
Backup Exec Device and Media Service - Domain Service Account
Backup Exec Job Engine - Domain Service Account
Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Systems - Local System
Backup Exec Server - Domain Service Account

That was the problem! BE Remote agent was running as domain user. Now I can see Exchange storage. I wait to mark as solution because I need to try backup and I can't till tonight. Another strange thing: there's still "Failed to open VCS cluster" in log. If I resolve every issue with Exchange maybe is better to open another discussion for that?

Hi,

Ja, it is best. There are a number of forums here where other people tack their queries to someone else's original queries which is a bit unfair.

But, in your case, if you've got some other problem, opening another discussion means it's open for everyone else to see and search for...
