You should never catalog a cleaning tape (as it would count as a clean operation)

If using a tape library, you should be using barcodes on your cleaning tape that match the standard required by the hardware vendor for the identification of cleaning media. As long as the correct barcodes are used a Scan operation should result in being unable to inventory (option greyed out) against the cleaning tape because an inventory would also count as a clean. If not using barcodes, the cleaning tape will let an inventory be run once, but not not a second time (and then give problems should you change the cleaning tape later - because BE expects and is designed to use barcodes in libraries)

If using a stand alone tape drive (instead of a library) then the action of inserting the cleaning tape cleans the drive automatically and after a short time ejects the tape automtically. You will not be able to run a catalog or inventory operation on a cleaning tape in a stand alone tape drive as the tape will never remain in the drive.
