connecting to backup exec 2010 remote agent

I recently did a push install of the remote agent of backup exec 2010 on a server running server 2012.  The agent starts and runs, but when I try to connect to it (connect to media server) from the main backup exec 2010 application, I get an error saying "The Backup Exec Server system service is not running.  The service is either not running or not installed."  I have confirmed the login credentials.

Are you using BE 2010 R3 SP4? Versions earlier than SP3, I think, does not support Server 2012

...you'd either need to upgrade to the latest version of BE 2010 R3's SP (as per pkh's query), or upgrade to BE 2014 with SP1.
