I have been having this problem for 30+ days. My backups report a failure with the following description

Error category : Server Errors
Error : e000fe30 - A communications failure has occurred.
For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-65072
My configuration is as follows:
Microsoft Small Business Server 2003r2 w/ 4GB Ram
Symantec Backup Exec for Windows 12 (Small Business Server License) SP3 w/ Hotfixes 317974 & 319698
Media Server ver 12.0 rev 1364
Administrative console ver 12 rev 1365
Desktop and Laptop Option ver 3.1 rev 3.38.61
Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.4000.2295 (Configured using SBS2003 best practice guide)

The communication failure happens within various sections of the backup, last night it began while backing up the system state. The job history indicates that it has backed up my C & D drives. It also reports backing up the Information store (Exchange) and SQL Server. The communication failure reappears during the the Sharepoint backup and any subsequent SQL databases that I have (there are 3 more) in addtion to the shadow compoments

I have tried completely uninstalling & reinstalling. I have applied the DCOMFIG modifications to no avail.

Make sure the VSS is enabled in services...in backup exec select use shadow copy or vss can't remember which one it is...I've seen this error on DC before...
I would test with two different jobs, one for data and see if it finishes without failures and one with just the shadow components...the other way to test would be use NTBackup and see if that works...

I also found this article that says Symantec is aware of the problem.

Under what account is the Remote agent service running? It MUST always run under Local System account on the Backup server as well as on the remote server!
