migrate backupexec 10 to XP

Hi,

We have backupExec 10 running in windows 2003 and we want to migrate it to a winXP machine. How can I do that? Is it possible to import all my configuration? jobs, tape config, etc. And the tape catalog? Can it be imported? How backup exec will be able to read the content of my tapes to eventually restore.

can i ask why you would want to run it on windows xp?

windows xp is a client base o/s, keeping the install on a Windows Server Operating System would be better in my eyes

Just make sure that XP is supported as a media server.

Also make sure the tape device is compatible with Windows XP.

If its not compatible than there may be issues while restoring data from tapes.

Hello,

As per Admin guide, supported OS for the Backup Exec 10.0 are as follows:

Windows 2000 Server family.

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 family.

Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 or later.

Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003

Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 Standard and Premium

Microsoft Small Business Server 2000

So Windows XP can be used for installation of Backup Exec.

Additionally, if you are leveraged for NOT changing the name of the server then the entire process can be reduced to following steps:

1. Stop all Backup Exec services, including the SQL MSDE service for Backup Exec from the services console.
2. Take the copy of DATA (path defaults to \Backup Exec\NT\DATA), CATALOGS folder (path defaults to \Backup Exec\NT\Catalogs.).
3. Take the copy all the serial numbers used.
4. Uninstall Backup Exec.
5. Reboot the machine.
6. Reinstall it back.

Next follows with Restoring the Backed up copy of BEDB Database and Catalogs.

1)      Copy the BEDB.bak file from the DATA folder copied earlier to new DATA folder.( \Backup Exec\NT\DATA)

2)      Open BEUtility.exe found in the \Backup Exec\NT directory.

3)      Select All Media Servers, right click on the media server name.

4)      Select Recover Database.

5)      In the Recovery method select "Drop existing database and reload from backup", once completed successfully. Stop the Backup Exec services.

6)      Then copy the backed up CATALOGS folder and replace it with the new one and re-start the backup exec services.

This step will ensure that all your jobs are back as well as your restore information.

The article mentioned earlier stands for Backup exec 11d and may involves steps not applicable for 10.x “Instructions for moving Backup Exec (tm) 11d or above to another computer system which has the same version installed.”
