Hello,
We are about to migrate a files server with BE2010 from a 2003 server x86 to a 2008 server R2 x64.
First,I want to install backup exec 2010 on the new server to prepare the migration. Is it possible ? Does it required another licence key?
Should I re-use the same installation CD or should I download a specific version with 64 bits?
Thank You.

ok so I started all the BE services manually in the services.msc , I connect to BE successfully and It create the right server name in the backup exec service manager. Data have correctly moved.
Now I have just to delete the Old server name entry and add the new server in the publish tab of my remote BE clients.

Never mind it saying "same Windows", it will be useful anyways.
Use the same installer that you used for your current setup.
Kind regards,

Hi,
It's all the same...the x32 and x64 versions are on the same ISO which you can use...no need to redownload the same thing.
You can use your same licenses, as you'd be decommissioning the current old backup server.
Thanks!

How to migrate Backup Exec to another server with a different windows operating system: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH129826

"Do not follow this procedure if any of the following are true:
If planning to move Backup Exec to a different drive/directory on the server."
And should I take care this lines ? because I plan to install BE on a different drive than the orignial server.
thank you

I've done it and haven't had an issue. Others probably have, hence the advisory in bold.

Ok ,
and last question, this KB says to :
•Backup-to-Disk folders as mentioned in section I - step #4 above (if created)
Note: The only files that must be copied over are the B2D*.*.bak files. These are the actual media (see Figure 6)
I created B2D folders, not on the backupexec server but on a Network Attached Storage. So I don't need to backup this .bkf files ?
thank you

Nope, since it is on a NAS, you can leave this as-is. You'd simply recreate your B2Ds on those drives and recatalog them if necessary!

I am actually doing the migration ( using this KB http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH67768 ) :
1 / I created a temporay location with all the data from the source server
2/ I installed backup exec on the new server with the all the licences-
3/ I tested the sqlcmd command in order to change the nameserver.
I'am in the last step : copy files from temporary location to the new server.
Once I realise this step, can I continue to work with BackupExec of the source server ? is there any conflicts between the 2 ?
In fact I juste want to copy the data on the new server to see if all the jobs, selections, devices , history are valid.
The real "migration" between the 2 servers will be made in 1 week.
Thank you.

Um, you might have to use BEutility to update the new name again.
Otherwise, as long as the FQDNs aren't the same on both media servers, it should be fine...as long as BE's new name has been updated using BEutility. If not, it's going to try start the services, and this will fail that process.

ok so i should apply this method :
1 / I manually copy the all the data to the new server
2 / I rename the server name with sqlcmd command
3 / then I use the Be utility with this procedure :
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH38988
4 / i can restart the BE services
I just saw in the KB that I sould re create all my selection Lists ??

Nope, you shouldn't have to do that if you're carrying the BED across too.
The TN you were following (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH67768) is what I have used successfully in the past.

that's the KB i'am using too.
Last question,
During the files copy from the temporary location to the new server :
1 / about the catalogs folder architecture :
\Backup Exec \ Catalogs \ SRV_ORI \ files
\Backup Exec \ Catalogs \ SRV_NEW \ files
Should I Copy only the files from Catalogs \ SRV_ORI \ to Catalogs \ SRV_NEW \ or
Should I replaced all the folder "Catalogs" ?
2 / about the data folder :
Should I replace all the folder and keep the msgq.dat of the new server ?

Hi
Q Should I Copy only the files from Catalogs \ SRV_ORI \ to Catalogs \ SRV_NEW \ or
Should I replaced all the folder "Catalogs" ?
Ans :
Yes you can copy the from SRV_ORI to SRV_NEW to overwrite all.
Q about the data folder :
Should I replace all the folder and keep the msgq.dat of the new server ?
Msgq.dat would be recreated when beserver service is started so no need to worry about msgq.dat
Thanks

Hi,
I finish Migration and I want to Start all the backupExec Service to verify if data was correctly moved.
When I lauch BE2010 - I choose services ( on the logon credential) - I see the old server name with the server state already on : started so I thinks it not normal ...
I join an screen capture .
( SRV_CD4 is the old server - SRV_CD6 should be the new)
Thank you

...did you use BEutility.exe to update the software with the new name of the server?
08-27-2012 06:43 AM
not yet
08-27-2012 06:46 AM
If you've moved to a server with a different server name you need to do this.

I use BEutility and update the name but i have still the same screen.
