pvlsvr.exe stuck in starting at startup and networking is down

Hello

we are using BE2010 r3 on win2003 32bit sp2 server. We have observed a strange thing in backup exec mentioned below.

1. The device and media service is stuck on starting status not able to kill it either. We tried to reboot and it is still same thing it will not kill it.

2. if we want to use our windows networking and when we try to type ipconfig in command prompt ....it will hang the and the cursor just blinks

3. after doing some research  we found nortel vpn software on our server and once we uninstalled it, everything started working fine.

4. can anyone tell me if anyone has seen this before or can this be a port conflict.

5. does anyone know which port pvlsvr.exe uses can this be changeable

Thank you

Hi,

The link below details what ports are used by BE:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH49563

You can try changing the port that the service uses, but you have to make sure the system is stable before you continue using it.

Thanks!

Hello CraigV

the article you shared it has all the services except pvlsvr.exe device and media service.

Backup Exec device and media do not use any specific port; it binds to a dynamically available port in the specified port range.

On services start-up, the Backup Exec Device and Media service will only start if the SQL Server (BKUPEXEC) service is already started. On the Windows side, the pvlsvr.exe will not successfully launch if the Windows RPC service is not running.

Probably the root issue may be related to the SQL or Windows RPC.

From a command prompt, type: netstat -b and see what port pvlsrv.exe is using.

Thanks!

Hello Sasha2008

I checked the sql service is up and running at startup but device and media is in starting status. I also checked the RPC service and it seems be also running. But why we are not getting same problem when we uninstall the nortel vpn software and reboot.

...best bet is to check what port range (if it uses a range) that the Nortel VPN software uses and see if you can change that port.

Thanks!
