"Error 1065: The database specified does not exist" problem

I’m getting an “Error 1065: The database specified does not exist” whenever I try to start the Backup Exec Device and Media Service. I’ve searched and noticed that many others have gotten this error, but none of the provided solutions have solved mine.

This is a new Windows 2003 server installation. (with Windows 2003 SP1 installed) Backup Exec actually worked fine for a few weeks, but after the last reboot, (because of power outage) the Backup Exec services don’t start. I’m using the MSDE database that the Backup Exec installation installs for Backup Exec. I’ve removed Backup Exec and removed the MSSQL$BKUPEXEC and Veritas directories, and then rebooted and reinstalled again. I’ve actually done that twice.

I’ve tried checking my MDAC version and running a Recover Database from Base procedure (from http://support.veritas.com/docs/267326) without any success. When I run the Recover Database procedure, I get an “Error: The database linkage is bad.” showing in the status window.

Even though it doesn’t apply to this situation, I tried doing the reset name procedure (from http://support.veritas.com/docs/274119) without any success either.

I verified that the MSSQL$BKUPEXEC service is running as Local System and that System has full rights to the Backup Exec DATA directory.

My MDAC version is 2.8 SP2 and all the files show fine with Microsoft’s MDAC Component Checker.

Please advise. Thanks!

Grant,

- Copy your Data + Catalogs folders to another location

- Make a clean uninstall of Backup Exec (folders, services, registry footprints)

- Reboot the server, apply MDAC 2.8, reboot the server after that

- Apply the following recommendations for the SYSTEM + Backup Exec Service account + Domain Admin + Interactive users, with "allow full ocntrol"

http://support.veritas.com/docs/277214

- Make the same users get full control on the following folders
\WINDOWS
\WINDOWS\Installer
C:\

- Download and install BEWS latest build + SP1

http://support.veritas.com/docs/277181

http://support.veritas.com/docs/278701

- Check in registry:
HKLM|Software|VERITAS|Backup Exec|Engine|Misc|DataPath to verify if it is pointing to the same location where the Backup Exec databases actually reside (by default the Backup Exec database files BEDB_dat.mdf and BEDB_log.ldf are located in C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\Data)

- If the issue still occurs:

Repair first: http://support.veritas.com/docs/253199

Then: http://support.veritas.com/docs/274102

Hope this helps :)

Sam

Well, I went through all of those steps and I'm still getting the same error message.

I thought of one thing that may shed some light on this situation. About 3 weeks ago, we installed another program on this server. (Backup Exec was already installed and running properly) This software came with an older version of MSDE (like maybe 7.0?) the person installing it saw the warning that that version of MSDE was not supported on Server 2003, but told it to continue anyway. The software ended up not working right with the older version and we removed the older MSDE, found instructions to make the software work with MSDE 2000, and installed that and everything with it worked great.

I thought it work mentioning.

More ideas?

Well, I Finally solved the problem. (with the help of Supriya at Veritas Support)

We ran the Component Checker (http://support.veritas.com/docs/267799) and found that there was one file missing, sqloledb.dll. I copied that from the C:\Windows\ServicePackFile\i386 directory into the C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Ole DB directory. I the registered the dll with regsvr32. I rebooted the server and everything started fine and worked fine.

Hope this helps someone out there.
