Changes to Trigger File Mechanism in EV2007 SP1 & V7 SP3

EV_Guys
Level 3

We're aware that this change perhaps wasn't made clear enough in the release notes so wanted to make sure you all understand what has been done & why. In summary, the  IgnoreArchiveBitTrigger.txt file can be used when a backup program can't use the archive bit (a value set on files to indicate it needs to be backed up).  For more info on the trigger file, refer to the "Backing up vault stores" section in the Admin Guide.

Before  V7 SP3 and  EV2007 SP1 the trigger file mechanism in EV only checked for the existence of the trigger file (IgnoreArchiveBitTrigger.txt) . If the file was found ,EV renamed it to IgnoreArchiveBitTrigger.old and processed all the outstanding Pending Icons (safety copies)  and changed them to full shortcuts. However, in the recent service packs, a change has been made so that EV now compares the creation date of the IgnoreArchiveBitTrigger.txt file against the last modified date of each archived DVS file. If the last modified date is later than that of the IgnoreArchiveBitTrigger.txt file EV will not process the associated Pending Icons.

In practice, this means you must create a new trigger file after your backup has completed rather than just do a rename to ensure the modified date corresponds with the time your backup completed. You can either do this using whatever your favourite file creation method is with VBScript or just use a simple command like "VER > IgnoreArchiveBitTrigger.txt " to create a file with a current timestamp.

The change is explained fully in the following tech note.
