Adding LUNs to VCS-controlled diskgroups online with disk-based fencing

Hi,

Can anyone describe a method to add LUNs to a VCS-controlled VxVM diskgroup when the disks in the diskgroup are protected using SCSI-3 fencing? We tried adding LUNs to a VCS-controlled diskgroup recently and got the following error message: " VCS ERROR V-16-10001-1036 (systemA) DiskGroup:dg1:monitor:No SCSI3 reservations found on diskgroup dg1". Is there a simple (or not so simple) way to add keys to new LUNs, without taking the diskgroup offline and online again? Our aim is to add storage without any outage.

Thanks, Alistair.

Hi,

Your disks are most probably not scsi3 enabled from the storage array level. That is what that error is telling you. Check if the storage admin has actually ticked / enabled SCSI-3

Hi,

When exactly you got this error, was it during an import operation or while a normal monitor cycle executed

There are ways available however some of them needs high expertise or some contain risk.

one of the option could be to delete all the keys from the diskgroup using vxfenclearpre & then add the disk simply, this will avoid the outage however to register keys again you will need to import the diskgroup from VCS so that keys can be registered.

There is a manual way to add keys using "/sbin/vxfenadm -a -k <keyname> <disk> " option however this must be used with expertise, slight mismatch can cause issues to disk & diskgroup .

I would rather recommend to offline the group so that diskgroup is offline, then add the disk & let VCS take care of importing the diskgroup with reservations.
