Veritas Cluster Server with no Shared Storage

Hi,

I'd like to know whether Veritas Cluster Server can run between 2 servers to control the failover of a Virtual IP Address without having Shared Storage?  It seems to me that dual heart beat link should be sufficient to ensure reliable heart beat between the two machines.

Hello.

Shared storage has nothing to do if u want to use VCS for failing over a virtual IP, you can very well do that....

& yes, 2 heartbeats should be good to keep VCS healthy....

Hi,

Do you aware that any Veritas documentation mentions about the VCS installation without a shared storage?  Will we fac any installation difficultity if the share storage is not present?

Hello wdzhang,

As Gurave mentioned, VCS has nothing to do with storage unless ofcourse if you wish to pass control to VCS for import / deport of Disk Groups, mount / unmount of file systems. So it can very well run without storage. You can just follow the installtion procedure of VCS as outlined in installation guide of VCS. You can locate the installation guide from the following link:
http://sfdoccentral.symantec.com/

Two dedicated heartbeat link we suggest and you may keep public interface as the low priority link to add further redundency. To know more please look into the admin guide and you can find the same from the above mentioned link.

Hi wdzhang,

Can you provide more details on what you are trying to do?  Are you planning on failing anything more than the IP address between the nodes in the cluster?

Does your application not have a need for shared data when failed over?  Possible static data that very rarely changes?

Are you trying to use internal storage and replicate the data between the nodes?

We need more details to help you out.  As mentioned before you can failover IP addresses without shared storage.  You can also do a lot of other things without shared storage.  However, most applications will have IP, Lanman and shared storage (if nothing more than replicated storage.)

Thanks,
Wally
