You could have a read of these technotes:

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/328341.htm

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/328340.htm

There is no step by step guide but it is covered in training.

DA is not a reporting tool. Do not expect to get accurate info on archiving trends from DA.

When DA dies a search it uses the indexed information and not the SQL data to generate the results so the info found may not be accurate.

When EV indexes an item the index engine first looks for the creation date if for some reason it cant find that it attempts to find the last modified date and again if it cant find that it uses the archive date (the date it is archived by EV)

We have seen many times when EV can identify the correct information and updates SQL with the correct information but the indexing engine does not identify the dates correctly and therefore ends up marking the items in the index with only the archiving date.

This causes issues when you attempt to use DA to build reports on the number of items archived between specific dates. DA is best used with very few dates restrictions and more targeted search criteria content.

If you want to report on the number of items archived between you are better served by using SQL queries to generate the results you need.

Also if you are looking for training on DA, Symantec do provide DA end user training as well as the white papers outlined above specifying how to perform Effective searches
